Cryptomeda Integrates Chainlink VRF to Secure Randomized Attribute Generation

We’re excited to announce that Cryptomeda — a unique fantasy world of non-fungible tokens (NFT’s) — has integrated Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) on the Polygon network. By integrating Chainlink’s industry-leading decentralized oracle network, we now have access to a tamper-proof and auditable source of randomness needed to ensure a fair and verifiable reward distribution. Ultimately this creates a more exciting, transparent, and fraud-proof user experience that allows users to interact with the staking and gameplay systems in a trusted way.

Cryptomeda was born out of a desire to create a unique way for the crypto community to interact with NFTs. We have created an NFT-based fantasy world centered around the most remarkable events and people within the crypto space. Our NFTs will be cross-game assets that will have ever-increasing utilities as we release more games, integrations, and expand the Cryptomeda ecosystem in the coming months; this will both create lasting value and reward our most loyal supporters. Beginning with our flagship game, Meda Wars, players will obtain NFT cards and battle for the chance to get NFT drops, rank up, and earn TECH tokens. All cards will be tradable in our marketplace.

To ensure a trusted reward system for Cryptomeda users we need access to a secure Random Number Generator (RNG) that any user could independently audit. However, RNG solutions for smart contracts require several security considerations to prevent manipulation and ensure system integrity. For instance, RNG solutions using on-chain data like block hashes can be exploited by blockchain miners, while off-chain RNG solutions like traditional data providers are opaque and don’t provide users with definitive proof about the integrity of the process.

After reviewing various solutions, we selected Chainlink VRF because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by Chainlink’s time-tested oracle infrastructure, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that guarantee the integrity of each random number supplied to smart contracts.

Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and cryptographic proof. The Cryptomeda smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides our users with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that Cryptomeda is provably fair and cannot be tampered with by the oracle, outside entities, or the Cryptomeda team.

Chainlink VRF will be integrated for the following near-term functions:

  1. Generate random attributes for our NFT cards and items (Security, Anonymity, and Innovation stats).
  2. Select winners of our NFT prize pool for TECH and LP token stakers.
  3. Determine when a player pulls rare in-game loot (future integration).

As we move further into our roadmap, Chainlink will continue to be a core component to generation, gameplay, and rewards.
